Williamsburg Senior Softball League
In late 2018, a couple of old friends decided to try and get a senior league off the ground, and were soon joined by some highly motivated, seasoned veterans. Their feeling was that the 55+ population in the Williamsburg area could support a senior league easily. Momentum quickly grew, and before long a new league was born.
Goals
WSSL aims to provide a senior-friendly softball experience that is fun and competitive while emphasizing safety and encouraging camaraderie. We operate as a nonprofit organization in partnership with the Williamsburg Parks and Recreation Department. Both spring and fall seasons are planned for 2019. We are actively publicizing the league and trying to recruit more players. Although Williamsburg and the surrounding area is our current focus, we don't impose any residency requirements. Players from other locations in southeastern Virginia are welcome to join the league.
Over the next few months, we will be reaching out to the community and hope to attract enough interest to make the league self-sustaining in future years. Part of our outreach involves seeking sponsors to help defray operational costs. We have taken some initial steps to identify potential sponsors, and will be expanding this effort as the year progresses.
Our long-term vision for league growth is to have enough players to form two or three divisions, each with four to six teams. Having multiple divisions would help match players with an appropriate level of competitive softball. Player attributes such as age, skill and physical condition would be used to differentiate the divisions. While we will be limited to just a few teams in our first year, we hope to achieve multiple divisions in subsequent years.

Attitude
You could say that we're seniors with attitude. We share an attitude about aging that embraces sports participation. Sports keep us physically active, mentally alert and emotionally engaged. While we don't deny the effects of aging, we know that softball competition is enjoyable and helps us stay healthy. We will be happy to welcome like-minded people to play ball with us.
As you might know, many famous personalities have expressed positive attitudes about how to view the aging process. We've collected a list of some quotations that capture these sunny outlooks. Sportsmanship is another aspect of the game that we emphasize. Our principles in this area are expressed by the WSSL Creed. |
