Minimum Performance Standards
The WSSL has instituted a set of minimum performance standards for new players wishing to join the league. Safety is a primary concern, not just for an individual player but also for those in the immediate vicinity when a play occurs. Player action and inaction both can have adverse effects on the field. As we aim to minimize the risk of injury to all involved, please try to evaluate your own abilities objectively.
Each new WSSL member will be assessed on batting, throwing, and catching, and must meet all of the following minimum requirements:
Although new members also will be assessed on their running ability, there is no minimum requirement for running.
For those with prior softball experience and currently having a reasonable degree of fitness, these requirements can be met without difficulty. In fact, we expect members destined for the Yorktown Division to perform well above these minimum requirements. We provide the performance standards primarily to determine whether an individual might not be suited for play in the Jamestown Division.
Prospective members are asked to judge for themselves whether they can meet these requirements. Those who think they can, but aren't quite sure, are encouraged to attend the WISC indoor winter program. We will be providing two WISC sessions specifically designed to help new recruits meet the performance standards. With those sessions attendees will hopefully be able to regain many of the throwing, catching and batting skills they once had.
